This tour’s toughness level is categorised as easy. You mainly travel by car. A bit of walking in the sunshine. Don’t forget your swimming suit/trunks!

DAY 1
We will start at 4.30am from Santa Marta (or sometimes at 8am from Riohacha, the capital city of the Guajira peninsula). After having breakfast we will head north towards the coastal paradise of Punta Gallinas. On the way we will pass by Uribia, the indigenous capital of Colombia, and visit Manaure, the largest salt complex found in Colombia. You will be able to see how salt is extracted and get to know about this region’s main economic branch. Afterwards we will continue up north towards the majestic Cabo de la Vela. Your lunch will be ready early in the afternoon at a beautiful spot where the desert meets the sea. Cabo de Vela is also very well known for kitesurfing. Watch surfers cruise through the ocean and lift up into the air performing some stunning tricks before we visit the the famous Dorada Beach and walk towards the lighthouse to enjoy a beautiful sunset. Dinner will be served in a local hotel where you will also spend your first night in hammocks.  

DAY 2
After our delicious breakfast early in the morning, we will arrive at a beach called ‘Pilon de Azucar’ where we will also climb a small mountain for a mind-blowing view across the desert and the sea of Cabo de la Vela. With our eyes wide open and the horizon of the ocean in our mind we will continue to Punta Gallinas by car or boat depending on the weather conditions. Our midday destination will be the lodge ‘Rancheria’ (a typical local lodge) where we will have lunch whilst enjoying the amazing desert landscapes. After a short break we will visit Bahia Honda to gaze at the spectacular rocky cliffs and blue lagoons over the golden sand of the desert before we get to Punta Gallinas, Watch another beautiful sunset at the Punta Gallinas’ lighthouse, the northernmost point of South America! Dinner will be served at our lodge again where we will spend another night in hammocks.  

DAY 3
Today you will get to see the majestic Taroa sand dunes, mountains of golden sand so fine that you will be able to slide down to the sea! We’ll spend part of the day in this stunning scenery where we will also lunch before we will go back to Riohacha or to Santa Marta. You will be arriving at your hostel or hotel at night where you can let all those beautiful impressions of the last three days pass through your mind again. 

The day by day schedule (including some places) of this tour can change and is subject to the tour guide’s decisions and local dependencies. 

Punta de Gallinas’s coastal-desert climate is literally almost the same the whole year. So you can book this tour at any time. 

• A night at Cabo de la Vela in hammocks.

The tour will start very early in the morning. If you want us to book you a hostel or hotel in Santa Marta simply specify it within your booking. Prices range between 20 USD and 300 USD and depend on the category of your prefered accommodation.  

Stuffing

• Small or medium backpack.
• Two plastic bags.
• Personal first aid kit and medication.
• Bottles of water/ water purifying tablets.

Punta de Gallinas has an enormous shortage of sweet water supplies. Whatever you can bring and share with the children is greatly appreciated. The children will thank you for it! 

Clothing

• Cap or hat.
• T-shirt and sweater shirt.
• Shorts.
• Rain jacket or plastic ponchos.
• Sneakers.
• Sandals or flip flops.
• Socks.
• Swim suit or swimming trunks.

(Basically: comfortable clothing for 3 days).

Accessories

• Sunblock.
• Sunglasses.
• Mosquito net.
• Insect repellent, at least 20% DEET. If you know of a better, non-chemical option please let us know!
• Flash or head light, lantern or torch and spare batteries or self-sustainable torch.
• Towel(s).
• Camera.

Please note that, although it very rarely causes a problem, the tour only runs with a minimum of 4 people. Therefore, a small amount of flexibility is appreciated!
